There’s something addictive about the Timeless Isle.
Blizz stated that their goal with the Timeless Isle was to bring back the exploration, and boy did they, in a big way. There’s just something that keeps me coming back and nuking the living daylights out of all these mobs.
For those of you who haven’t come back to play the Timeless Isle yet, it is a new zone with no dailies. Just mobs. Lots of mobs. And lots of hidden treasure chests. These chests and mobs have a tendency to give you Timeless Gear which is BIND ON ACCOUNT and can be sent to your level 90 alts to give them ilvl 496 raid gear. Let me repeat, you can get 496 raid gear from a box you find on the ground. After punishing altoholics all expansion, the Timeless Isle is Christmas and Birthday wrapped up in one.
Almost every Rare on the island has some kind of triggering mechanic, for example, to fight the rare Turtle, kill all the turtles! In addition to the Timeless Gear there’s also a lot of awesome fun on-use items, for example I got some weird Lily Pad thing that gives me a druid’s Healing Touch spell. Yeah!
Pew Pew Pew
Honestly, there’s no gear motive for Pandette to keep grinding away at the Timeless Isle, although I’ll admit I’ve enjoyed decking out several of my alts in the 496 Timeless Gear that just seems to rain from the heavens. I was beyond shocked when I looted not one. not two, but three Timeless Curios on the same afternoon, gifting three of my alts awesome 496 trinkets. They’re not crappy trinkets, they’re actually really good. And that’s the real shocker.
Most of the Timeless Gear is moderately itemized, to say the least, but when what you’re starting with is a greened-up level 90 alt, then they are a godsend. What’s funny is that the massive disparity in dps output from a fresh 90 and a geared 90 is well over 200%. Pandette sustains a good 150k dps on these elite mobs, while Dogbert is blowing all his cooldowns trying to get to 80k.
That’s the other fun part. All these mobs are elites. Soloable elites. There’s something inherently fun in fighting something that stands a chance at killing you. Unless you’re a frost mage or a blood dk of course, then they stand no chance of killing you. However, it’s awesome that the rares that are peppered throughout the island are quite the minibosses. I’ve soloed one on Pan, and it was not an easy thing to accomplish. When it was done, I walked away feeling like a badass.
Not that everything is rosy. Three times now I’ve blown 7500 Timeless Coins on the Timeless Armor Caches to send to alts, only to have the random gear turn out to be that one purple I already have. It’s frustrating, and there are a few things that are inherently frustrating about the island. If you can’t put out DPS, you’re going to be beating on that mob for a while. Rares have a shocking tendency to die juuuuust before you can get in range. But thank god they’re faction-tagged and not player tagged.
Also the Celestials are hilarious, because each of them seems to have an avoidable one-shot mechanic that I just don’t seem skilled enough to avoid. I especially hate dying to Chi-Ji’s death song because you can’t even see what’s killing you. You just die because you didn’t stack. OH I’M SO LAME. It’s so easy to avoid, but there I am running back and dying all over again.
