The updated Little Rascals Guide to FROST MAGE as we lay a Siege on Orgrimmar!
Mastering the new Mastery
We’re still behind Arcane on raw damage output, but still away ahead on raw fun output. With the predictable nerf to 5.3′s Combustion, I think we might see a few Fire Mage converts to the Icy Religion. The new Icicles Mastery is going to give you a straight up DPS increase, and thankfully, it’s not really something you need to think about. Don’t worry about saving up to five icicles if you get unlucky with some Fingers of Frost procs, just hit that Ice Lance ASAP. The main benefit from Icicles that I see is that it gives you a second damage opportunity during movement phases.
Intellect > Spell Hit (15% cap) > Haste > Crit (23% cap) = Mastery
This translates as follows: Frostbolt that does not hit, does no damage; More frostbolts do more damage; you can’t have more than 100% crit in shatter; and while mastery increases the power of your new Icicles and Water Elemental, it’s still better to be chucking Frostbolts faster and harder.
If you put on spirit gear, you are stupid and we can’t be friends.
Pandette’s Recommended Spec
First off, remember that talents are completely preferential now. However, here’s why I think this is the best build.
With the change to the Icy Veins glyph last patch, I’m very much a convert to Presence of Mind. Make sure you have all of your cooldowns lined up and in the right order to unleash a PoM Frostbolt after you’ve run out of Brain Freeze and Fingers of Frost procs. PEW PEW PEW!
Ice Barrier makes healers like you, as it really does absorb a LOT of damage, although the new Flameglow may be a better choice if you don’t know how to time damage reduction cooldowns properly. Cauterize keeps you alive too, don’t forget to pop Ice Barrier when the Cauterize hits to keep all that delicious health!
Ring of Frost got a 5.1 nerf that limits affected targets to just 10, but more often than not, that’s all you’re going to need. Don’t forget to shatter lance all those fools.
Remember to tab target Nether Tempest onto all of the mobs. Onto all of the mobs. Onto all of the mobs.
Incanter’s Ward is the talent you just have to use. Invocation sure would be cool, but c’mon, the mage’s motto is: Always Be Casting. Simple fact is that with IW, you never really have to care about your mana. Seriously. You’re almost always at full. Keep it up on CD, and soak that inevitable AoE damage, and you’ll even get a big ol’ spellpower boost. Will you get more DPS from the Rune? Sure, if you can actually stand on the damn thing. IW. Do it.
Major Glyphs and You: Scribble to Victory
Glyph of Icy Veins is an AMAZING glyph that simply increases your damage output, instead of running you up to the GCD limit. This is now a must-have!
Glyph of Splitting Ice Considering you only use Ice Lance under Fingers of Frost, that means that you’re guaranteed to get a crit off that second lance as well.
Glyph of Water Elemental keeps your blue buddy by your side at all times. That means that you’ll no longer have a situation where he can’t use Freeze because you left him blasting away on the other side of the map.
Glyph of Evocation (Substitute for Glyph of Water Elemental) if your healers just can’t keep you alive. It’s not much, but sometimes it’s more important than your Water Elemental’s placement on the map.
Always have Frost Armor on!
1. Nether Tempest always active!
2. Frozen Orb on cooldown, every time! (Guaranteed Fingers of Frost!)
3. Frostfire Bolt on Brain Freeze
4. Ice Lance on Fingers of Frost
5. Frostbolt constantly if you can’t do 1 through 4
1. Icy Veins use on cooldown for triple your Icelance/Frostbolt/Frostfire Bolt pleasure!
2. Alter Time when Brain Freeze and 2 Fingers of Frost have procced. Try to blow it right after popping Icy Veins to extend duration
3. Presence of Mind to fire off a Frostfire Bolt, preferably when Icy Veins is rolling.
3. Freeze to force an FoF proc, unless you’re on a boss or immune ad
4. Deep Freeze Use on non-boss targets to increase the damage of Ice Lance.
5. Mirror Images for a lil’ extra DPS
6. Time Warp when it’s time for Heroism
