Hey there! Rendrin here bringing something I feel like I’m finally comfortable writing.
This is a guide (note examples are not bold and every instance is different) on 5.4 Disc Priest pvp arena pref.
Let’s start off with the Talents
First Tier of talents
These first talents are CHANGEABLE ALMOST EVERY GAME. There is no set talents with these in mind.
With that being said, if you’re fighting a melee class such as DK or Rogue who like to sit priests, taking Void Tendrils would be better, because it is a uncleansible root meaning they have to trinket/kill them/freedom/bubble to get out of.
Psyfiend is good if you’re fighting a caster team, because it allows you to get fears off without actually going into the middle of an arena.
Dominate Mind is good if you have good partner(s) who are arena savvy and can live without you piggy backing them every second, meaning this can allow you to get some super long CC chains especially on the enemy healer allowing you to secure a kill
Second tier of Talents.
Second Tier Talents are preference mobility talents.
These talents are preference, because people enjoy body and soul sprints and people prefer the self freedom from phantasm when you fade.
Body and soul is good for melee cleaves, because chances are you are healing your partner and going to be bubbling him like crazy, this will just give him crazy amounts of speed allowing him to stay on target more often than not.
Angelic Feather, is more for caster cleaves, because it allows you to synergize with your team and allow you to set up kite routes with your fellow casters to get away from pesky melees.
Phantasm has really lost its value, its a great self freedom but with the game as is, SELF is a big turn down-Don’t take this talent.
Third Tier of Talents – the mana regen tier
The talent you NEED to take here is Mindbender, 1 minute CD = almost constant mana regen keep on CD and use especially on pets so it gets the full effect, or the statue if you’re fighting a monk. Can also be used on enemy kill target considering it does decent amounts of damage.
Fourth Tier of Talents
Desperate Prayer- a pretty big self heal especially when macroed with battlemaster trinket for health. However is a 2 minute CD and a pretty big dump, because if you blow it you can’t use it for another 2 minutes and in arenas that’s a life time.
Spectral Guise- instantly makes you go stealth, really good for dropping focus targets and even stopping mid casts such as fear, polymorph, or even spectral guising a charge. The amount of skill cap with this talent is unbelievable because you can juke the enemy by fake turning while stealth and they’ll keep going that way thinking you did. Take this Talent.
Angelic Bulwark just doesn’t cut it the shield is pretty pathetic and the 90 second internal is pretty long compared to the skill allowance on spectral guise.
Fifth row of Talents
The offensive talent tier
Twist of Fate isn’t good because your teammates should never be just sitting at 35% for this talent to take effect.
Power Infusion- 20% spell haste and reduces mana cost allows you to be aggressive and defensive at the same time, if you’re human macro this to your spell power trinket for ultimate burst heals/dps. Take this talent
Divine insight, just isnt worth it because of the utility and probability that power infusion gives. This talent is still a good talent, just power infusion is just better.
Sixth and Final Tier
The mana Dumps.
Cascade isn’t that good because at most you’re going to have 5 people (5v5 arenas) to bounce from and the healing just isn’t worth it.
Divine Start- a ball that you shoot damaging and healing anything it touches on the way to and on the way back, allows for decent healing or a good stealth grabber. Take this talent.
Halo- is just to much a damage dump and finicky in the way it works. The max range you are it can easily heal for 100k+ ,but if point blank wont even heal for maybe 10k.
Next to Glyphs
Mass Dispel was nerfed recently so you need this glyph in order to get off iceblock and divine protection, which can and are game changers.
Weakend Soul, because a stealth team will generally wait for your bubbles to fall off to open, besides less weakened soul= more bubbles and you’re disc so you’re not going to be healing anytime soon-lawl.
Prayer of Mending- Can easily be one of the most OP glyphs ever, if able to bounce between people can crit heal for 80k a tick.
Now that, that’s over with. How do I play it?
A priest has many tools to accommodate aggressive play-style (preferred for priests) or defensive play-style.
What you want to generally start out with is. Spirit Shell stack your teammates this allows for opening aggressiveness and even eliminates early pressure. PW:shield your teammates before they go in and try to spectral guise for a fear to start off some CC chain to disorient your enemies. This also helps to control the enemy team not only for now, but for messing up their execution further securing you the win of the game! Disc priests are also great caster damage if allowed to spam smite and penance the enemy not to mention dot damage from Shadow Word Pain and Holy Fire.
When being forced defensive you can prayer of mending bubble and flash of light- This gives them a instant heal once bubble breaks and gives them a cushion to live while you’re being CC’ed or they are getting low. Prayer of Mending also gives you the buff Holy Spark which is more healing for that one cast to also help bring your teammate back to full health.
If normal healing try to use penance as much as possible, because you can be silenced during it for the full duration of some silences such as counterspell, you can move and cancel the casting of penance allowing you to fully juke the interrupt entirely. Try to keep bubbles up as much as possible you’re disc you’re not here to out heal damage just to absorb it.
Some normal decent CC chains we have as a priest are: Psyfiend psychic terror into a normal DR’ed half psychic scream fear, or psychic scream into a Dominate Mind spam, or last but not least psychic scream your enemy healer around a pillar than Void Tendrils to hold him out of LoS of his partner’s allowing you to secure a kill.
Just remember to use your CD’s and try to relax Disc Priest can get pretty frustrating at times. Remember if you don’t use a CD that could be the RNG to save you or your partner, such as Pain suppression Power word: Barrier or even inner focus.
I hope you enjoyed this guide, just have fun with it every one starts some where.
